My story

From an operational career to business

In 2021 I retired from a 26-year operational career at Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office, as head of a research branch and as an operational investigator. Right after retiring, I founded Modi-In.

Over the years I did practically every task in the intelligence world: data analytics, processing raw information from many sources and formats, turning findings into intelligence you can act on, and leading multidisciplinary projects across several arenas at once.

I led teams of analysts across five sections, at a rank equivalent to colonel, and completed my service as a manager in the Prime Minister’s Office internal audit division, and as the project lead of the intelligence research to locate the soldiers missing since the Battle of Sultan Yacoub, until the file was closed and all three were brought home.

Today I bring the same methods to business. If the information you need is out there, I will find it for you, legally and ethically.

Bringing home the missing soldiers of Sultan Yacoub

For eight years I led the research to locate the soldiers missing since the battle. In this keynote for organizations I open the file and turn it into tools for managers and teams.

Glossary

Business intelligence glossary

Core concepts, in brief

Open-source intelligence

OSINT · Core concept

Collecting and analyzing information that has been published openly and legally: media, social networks, websites and official publications. The value is never in a single piece of information, but in cross-checking many of them.

What is OSINT

Competing hypotheses

ACH · Method

A method developed by Richards Heuer of the CIA: raise several possible explanations for the same evidence, and look for the one that the least evidence contradicts.

Competing hypotheses

Devil’s advocate

Ipcha Mistabra

“The opposite is likely.” Deliberately testing the scenario opposite to the accepted assessment, so you don’t lock onto a single explanation.

Devil’s advocate

Rumsfeld matrix

Known unknowns

Four kinds of knowledge: what we know we know, what we know we don’t know, what we don’t know we don’t know, and what we know without realizing it.

The Rumsfeld matrix

Facts vs. assessments

Analytic thinking

A ground rule of intelligence analysis: separate what is known from what is estimated, and go back to the original raw data when an old assessment starts behaving like a fact.
